OPM Termite Practice Exam

Termites primarily rely on a symbiotic relationship with a range of microorganisms, particularly protozoa and bacteria, to help them digest cellulose, the main component of their wood-based diet. These microorganisms reside in the termite's gut and produce enzymes that break down cellulose into simpler sugars that the termite can then absorb and use for energy.

The presence of protozoa is particularly noteworthy because these single-celled organisms are unique to some species of termites and play a crucial role in the fermentation process of cellulose. The bacteria in the termite gut also contribute significantly to this digestion process by further breaking down the byproducts of cellulose fermentation, allowing termites to access otherwise unavailable nutrients.

While fungi and bacteria do play a part in some decomposer systems, they do not primarily assist termites in cellulose digestion as protozoa and bacteria do. Understanding this relationship is essential for appreciating how termites are able to thrive on a diet that consists largely of tough plant material.
